There are just ten First Families of Australian Wine. These are families that are producing landmark Australian wines that showcase the diversity, quality and authenticity of Australian wine. Yalumba was established in 1849 and it is the most historic family owned wine company in Australia. It remains fiercely independent and extremely progressive through the generational ownership of the Hill-Smith family.
The winery has blossomed into one of Australias premier wineries and their success stems from the dedication of generations to high quality, organic where possible, and progressive thinking. The winery was founded by Samuel Smith in 1849 and his own grandson Fred Caley-Smith took the reigns in 1893. In the mid 1980’s Robert and Sam Hill-Smith bought out the other family shareholders ensuring the winery remains in the family for another generation at least.
Today, Yalumba is one of the only wineries to own it’s own cooperage where they make their own barrels for ageing their wines. They also own a nursery where they are dedicated to exploring the next generation of vines and grape varieties that will thrive in Australia.
We are delighted to welcome Paul Webster from Yalumba to Dublin on April 18th for a special dinner featuring the premium wines of the Yalumba Estate. Paul has decided to bring with him ‘The grapes and wines that are less travelled’ so you will enjoy a three course meal in the inimitable surroundings of Bang Restaurant on Merrion Row, in Dublin 2, along with some special wines such as their Old Bush Vine Grenache, their Signature Bordeaux Blend Cabernet Merlot, their Wrattonbully dessert wine and their Organic Viognier and Riesling wines.
This event will be all about discovering the treasure trove of wines and grape varieties in Australia, beyond those we came to know in the 1980's and 1990's when Australia first started to export their wines. We are used to seeing Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay and this will be very different. We will explore new varietals, premium blends and organic and biodynamic wines, whilst hearing from Paul about each wine we taste throughout the evening.
As always, the event is supported by Yalumba themselves as well as WineOnline.ie and the local importer of Yalumba in Ireland. Book your seats for this much anticipated event, the first of our in person Winemaker Series Dinners in 2024. Seats are limited and are expected to sell out quickly. We look forward to seeing you in Bang Restaurant on Thursday 18th April 2024 at 7.30pm.
