Susana Balbo is Argentina’s first and best-known female winemaker, establishing her own winery in 1999 on principles of quality, innovation and sustainability. She’s been called the ‘Queen of Torrontés’ for her work creating world-class versions of the grape in the 1980s and pioneering the country’s white-wine scene. She was awarded the International Wine Challenge Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
The Uco Valley in Mendoza has hosted vineyards for at least a century, but it’s only in recent years that it’s seen a stratospheric rise in reputation. It turns out great whites – Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as Torrontés. All of Susan Balbo’s wineries are high-altitude, in vineyards set more than 1,000 metres above sea level. Torrontés is Argentina's great white grape — aromatic, unique, and utterly captivating when grown at altitude in the Salta region.
This rosé is a great example of teamwork by Susana and her children, José and Ana. They created a fresh, aromatic rosé “a la Provencal” using techniques similar to white winemaking, including early picking and gentle pressing for a light pink-salmon colour. This rosé originates from the renowned Valle de Uco region, in Mendoza with vines thriving at an average elevation of 1,050 m/3,445 ft above sea level, which contributes to the wine’s exceptional quality. The varietal blend is 60% Malbec, 40% Pinot Noir.
Tasting Notes:
A rosé with an elegant salmon colour. On the nose, it has subtle floral notes with delicate aromas of dried fruits. On the palate, its freshness and juicy acidity blend perfectly with flavours of currants and strawberries. It is a wine of great structure and balance that can be enjoyed on its own or with food, due to its pleasant tension on the palate.
Food Pairings: This wine pairs beautifully with smoked salmon, Asian spicy food, grilled poultry, hard cheeses.
