Description :

Ironstone Vineyards is run by the second and third generation of the Kautz family, who settled in the Lodi area of California but traced their roots to Germany. John Kautz, the owner and Chairman of Ironstone Vineyards, started out farming vegetables but shifted to viniculture with the establishment of the Bear Creek Winery and planting the first set of wines in 1968. Ironstone Vineyards was developed and built in the 1980s. Solid rock was blasted to create ten thousand square feet of underground caves. Ironstone Vineyard was finally opened in 1990 and now sees every member of the Kautz family involved in the business.

Lodi has become the self-proclaimed “Zin” capital of the World producing over 40% of California's Zinfandel grapes. The Kautz Family grows these Zinfandel grapes in the Mokelumne River sub-appellation of the Lodi AVA. The area is blessed with an alluvial fan of sandy loam, well-drained soils and a classic Mediterranean climate.

Grown in vineyards that are over 45 years old

Tasting Note: This medium-bodied Zin has exceptional varietal character with lovely aromas of dark fruit and blackberry. Subtle pepper spice mingles with richly concentrated fruit flavours of blackberry, ripe plums and fresh red raspberries. Barrel aging created its smooth, silky finish and unprecedented depth.

Food Matches: Any type of meat - whether its pork, beef or game - is ideal with this wine. Cioppino is another amazing complement or try it with tomato-based pastas, hearty stews or a plate of strong, aged cheeses.
