Description:
In 1890, the Duke of Aosta visited Pontassieve after learning of a hidden gem in the cellar of the newly established Ruffino, a rising winery known for its Chianti. Impressed, he made Ruffino the royal supplier, and this wine has been a flagship since 1927, bearing its iconic label.
Olga Fusari is the Ruffino Chief Winemaker. She oversees the creation of all the Ruffino wines, with a clear focus on the newly acquired Bolgheri property. Olga joined the Ruffino Group in October 2023, after a long experience of 18 years spent in Ornellaia, working with Bordeaux style blends.
“Bolgheri is where I began making wine and where I feel at home every time I return” says Olga Fusari.
“Creating a new project is a rare opportunity in a winemaker’s career—a living, vibrant emotion that I hope will be felt in every sip of Garzaia. This white wine combines the freshness and minerality of Fiano with the softness and roundness of Viognier, in a pleasant interplay of balance."
Vineyard:
The grapes come from Tenuta La Garzaia in Bolgheri, specifically from Le Sondraie area, on the northern edge of the Bolgheri appellation. The soil is rich in clay and limestone, with small percentages of silt.
Vinification:
After being hand-harvested, the grapes are cooled and then gently pressed as whole clusters. Fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel and partly in 16 hl ceramic amphorae. The wine is then aged on its fine lees for six months, with regular bâtonnage that enhances body and roundness.
Tasting Notes:
Colour: Straw yellow with greenish reflections
Aroma: White flowers, peach and apricot, enriched by citrus and herbaceous nuances.
Palate: Enveloping yet fresh, with good salinity and an elegant, persistent finish.
Food Pairings: Ideal when paired with grilled fish and white meats, structured pasta dishes, vegetable quiches, and semi-aged or soft cheeses.
