One of the most established names in Marsannay, Domaine Jean Fournier is run by dynamic winemaker, Laurent Fournier. Since joining his father Jean in 2001, Laurent has developed a reputation for both crafting quality Marsannay and championing the Aligoté
grape. The Fournier’s intricate knowledge of Marsannay has led to Laurent spearheading the current 1er Cru classification procedure. The family’s relationship with Marsannay stretches back to 1964, when Jean Fournier first saw the potential in ‘Clos du Roy’ and ‘Le
Chapitre’, two climats soon to be classified as Marsannay 1er Cru. The domaine’s 22 hectares of vines, the majority of which are in Marsannay, were planted between 1945 to 2010, except for 0.5 hectares in ‘Champ Forey’ planted with ‘Aligoté doré’ in 1921 and 1945.
Vineyards:
Farmed organically since the early 2000s, the vineyards are planted at high density (13,000- 20,000 vines per hectare) creating deep root systems that protect the vines from climate extremities and intensify mineral expression in the finished wines. Natural grass cover strengthens soil diversity and water retention, and working the vines with horses avoids compaction. ‘Saint-Urbain’ blends several Marsannay village parcels (Champ Forey’, ‘Etalles’, ‘Ouzeloy’, ‘Crais’) planted between the 1950s and 2000, alongside young vines (10-25 years old) from future Marsannay 1er Cru sites including ‘Les Longeroies’, ‘Es Chezots’, and ‘Chapitre’.

Tasting Notes:
The nose is brimming with vibrant red fruit and notes of violet. The well balanced palate evidences the approachable yet refined style of Laurent. A generous red fruit is balanced by bright acidity and supple tannins.
