Established in 1991 by winemaker Nuno Cancela de Abreu, Boas Quintas is located in the Dão region of Portugal and showcases the quality of modern Portuguese winemaking. A phenomenal story given that Nuno has won a Decanter Best in Show platinum medal as the Decanter Awards - one of only 50 wines to do so out of 18,094 wines to do so.
by mountains on three sides, the Dão region is protected from both the direct influence of the continental climate and the chill rains from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Vineyards are planted on slopes at 200m above sea level that helps retain acidity and freshness. The estate works with native grape varieties; Encruzado for the white wines and Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Alfrocheiro e Jaen for the reds.
The main soil composition is granite and vineyard practices incorporate a bio-diversity program. The award-winning wine styles are defined by freshness, bright fruit and smooth elegant tannins and Nuno aims “to respect the unique identity of each terroir”.
Tasting Note:
A bright, ruby coloured wine that reveals an exuberance on the nose marked by the red fruit aroma together with the floral hint typical of the Touriga Nacional. Medium-bodied and smooth, with an attractive freshness and elegant tannins with a rich finish.
Food Matching
This gentle red works well with white meats and soft cheese.
