"Vie di Romans is based in the heart of Isonzo, where Gianfranco Gallo's 50 hectares of vineyard produce about 250,000 bottles a year. The well-drained soil is stony, glacial and rich in minerals, soaking up like a sponge whatever rain falls. A cool east wind causes a big difference between day and night temperatures, which in turn slows ripening and allows the grapes to accumulate a great deal of flavour. This, along with the low yields that Gallo achieves and his proclivity for picking grapes only once fully mature, gives single vineyard wines of great intensity and richness. As a result, Gallo releases the wines a year later than usual.

This fullness is evident in his sauvignon blanc from the 10 hectare Piere vineyard  It  has a lovely texture and nutty character. The Piere sauvignon blanc  is 100% sauvignon blanc, is striking for its minerality and aroma. All these wines have the hallmark of great individuality, something that really marks Gianfranco Gallo apart from the crowd."

Winemaker: Gianfranco Gallo and Antonio Pelos

Vineyards:

Fruit comes from the Piere vineyard which has an average vine age of 20 years and an elevation of 33 metres above sea level. It is located in the commune of Mariano del Friuli. Approximately 10.8 hectares are planted with a density of 6,000 vines per hectare. Exposure is north-south with single guyot training. The soil is well-drained with a gravelly texture and a mix of silica-rich clay and conglomerate.

Vinification:

Grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks. A pre-fermentation cold maceration at 8°C took place after which the must was cold stabilised. Selected yeasts were used for the fermentation, which took place at 16-19°C and lasted 14 days. No malolactic fermentation occurred and the wine spent eight months ageing on its lees before bottling .

Tasting Notes:

Straw yellow in colour, this wine has an open, aromatic nose. Fresh peach and greengage perfumes are complemented by a hint of tropical fruit. The wine has excellent balance in the mouth between a rounded, fuller style of Sauvignon and the freshness that is characteristic of this region, finishing with a citrus tang and persistent minerality.

Food Suggestion: Delicious with a meaty white fish or a goats cheese salad.

Closure: Natural Cork  ABV: 14.5%  Acidity [g/l]: 5.75
