Producer: Jane Eyre
Description:
Originally from Melbourne, Jane Eyre “fell in love” with Burgundy while doing work experience at Domaine Chevrot in 1998. Since 2011, she has developed her own négociant business and makes a range of perfumed and expressive wines from celebrated vineyards across Burgundy and Beaujolais.
In a short space of time, Jane has established herself as one of Burgundy’s most revered winemakers. A feat proven by her recent appointment as head winemaker at Domaine Comte Armand in Pommard, one of the most historic domaines of the Côte de Beaune. Jane will continue to produce her own wines, while taking on this prestigious role. Further testament to Jane’s winemaking prowess is the ‘Négociant of the Year’ award given to her in 2021 by the Revue des Vins de France. Jane is the first woman and the first person from outside of France to be awarded this. Both accolades are a phenomenal achievement for a relative newcomer to Burgundy.
Product Features: Sustainable, Vegan, Vegetarian
Vineyards:
As a micro-négotiant, Jane works with some of Burgundy’s top growers, allowing her to secure parcels of fruit that beautifully showcase the complex and alluring sub-regions of Burgundy. The fruit for this wine is sourced from two vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin: Combe du Dessus, which is just opposite the Château of Chambertin, and En Champs a little further along the slope opposite the Les Champeaux 1er Cru vineyard. The soils have a limestone base with marl, clay, schist and granite. The vines are between 35 and 55 years old.
Vinification:
The small parcels of fruit were hand harvested and 30% whole bunch was used in the ferments. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts took place in stainless steel tanks with a combination of gentle pump overs and punch downs. Post fermentation, the wine was transferred to French oak barriques (20% new) where it aged for 14 months before being bottled, unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Notes:
Jane's Gevrey-Chambertin is an impressive expression of this prime village in the Côte de Nuits. The nose has cherry aromas, wild savoury characters with some trademark earthy Gevrey notes. The wine is well-balanced and accessible with lovely dark cherry and raspberry fruit on the palate, fine grained tannins and a lasting finish.
Food Suggestion: The best possible match for roast game birds (grouse, partridge or pheasant). Also try with duck in fruit-based sauces, poached or baked salmon or creamy, strong cheeses.
