"This estate was founded in 1968 by Vittorio Colacino, a doctor who grew grapes and made wine in his spare time. The 21 hectare property is now run by his son Mauro, and the wines are made under the watchful eye of Nicola Tucci, previously of Farnese and now a partner in Spanish producer Cien y Pico. As you'd expect from someone who has done a vintage with Dandelion Vineyards in Australia, the wines are pristine, scented and beautifully balanced.

The unoaked Savuto Bianco is a blend of 40% Montonico, 40% Pecorello and 20% Greco Bianco. As the vineyards are situated at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level, the perfumes are expressive and lend to the wine a vibrant, fresh, white pear fruit, with a lovely texture on the palate. The Savuto Rosso offers stunning value. The grapes undergo a five day cold soak when they arrive at the winery in order to extract colour and soft tannins, after which the must is fermented at 28°C to ensure the lifted perfumes remain fresh. A blend of Arvino, Nerello Cappuccio and Magliocco, it has nice colour, a touch of plum and wood smoke on the nose and lovely grainy tannins on the palate.

The single vineyard 'Vigna Colle Barabba' is a blend of Magliocco, Arvino, Greco Nero and Nerello Cappuccio. All the varieties are vinified separately and aged in oak for three months prior to blending. Nicola was keen to retain the freshness, so pulled the wine out of oak early. It has lovely colour, ripe and plummy fruit on the nose and good depth and ripe tannins on the finish. Such quality from further north would be much more expensive.

These wines, which will have most people reaching for the Jancis Robinson/Julia Harding/José Vouillamoz book on grape varieties, illustrate the great diversity on offer in Italy. But most of all, they are wonderfully quaffable wines that offer pleasure and individuality."

Vineyards:

The vines are grown in the Savuto valley, which is situated in the municipality of Marzi near Cosenza. There are 21 hectares of vineyards, located at approximately 500 metres above sea level. The guyot trained vineyards are well ventilated, allowing the grapes to develop expressive perfumes.

Vinification:

The grapes were carefully selected and hand picked. On arrival at the winery, the grapes were gently pressed. Temperature controlled fermentation then took place for 5-8 days with regular pumping over to extract flavour compounds from the skins. The wine was then racked off into stainless steel vats where it remained until bottling. Once bottled, the wine was aged for a further two months before release.

Tasting Notes:

Intense ruby red in colour with purple hues. Lifted perfumes of cherry, bramble and spice. Concentrated and balanced on the palate with flavours of sour cherry, red fruits and a touch of liquorice on the finish.

Food Suggestion: Drink alongside pasta with meat sauces, veal and rabbit dishes.

Closure: Natural Cork  ABV:13%  Classification: DOC
