This label is the brainchild of Shaw + Smith. Martin and Michael have pursued with Shaw + Smith a relentless focus on Chardonnay, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, yet have been itching for a few years to work with other varieties. After much discussion they decided to use another label for these varieties, and with typical Aussie directness called it ‘The Other Wine Co’. In 2015, winemaker Adam Wadewitz, a highly impressive addition to the team at Balhannah, selected some Pinot Gris from the Adelaide Hills and Grenache from Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale to make two wines for The Other Wine Co. The unoaked Pinot Gris is delicious: it has the tell-tale bread crust and ripe pear character of this variety at its best, and is dry and crisp on the palate. The Grenache, picked early to preserve its bright red fruit characters, is equally impressive. The tannins are ripe and silky, the fruit lifted and irresistible.

Vineyards:
"Grapes are sourced from a 45 year old, dry-grown vineyard in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. 2015 was a remarkable vintage. Above average winter rainfall ensured a good start to the growing season and warm weather in late December / early January was moderated by welcome rain on 13th January. The season concluded with mild, steady conditions and delivered fruit of wonderful quality. The fruit was picked at optimal ripeness to achieve a balance of acidity and the bright fruit characters of Grenache. It was then fermented in open top fermenters; one contained whole berries entirely destemmed but not crushed, the other included 30% whole bunches including the stems. The wine spent minimal time in oak to ensure that the brightness and vibrancy of fruit is maintained. The wine displays classic Grenache red fruit and spice characters, with intensity and concentration gained from old vines. The tannins are ripe and silky, the fruit lifted and irresistible. Classic Grenache - intense red fruit and spice."
