The Malbec Selection
Malbec is a black-skinned grape variety native to south-western France (specifically the area around Cahors), but now better known as the iconic wine grape of Argentina. Through its success in the vineyards of Mendoza, in a few short decades Malbec has shot from relative obscurity to international fame, simultaneously bringing new-found attention and respect to Argentina as a wine-producing nation.
This is a new collection of great Malbec wines from Masters and connoisseurs who specialise in making wines from this great varietal.
Wildeberg Coterie Cabernet Franc & Malbec
Franschhoek, South Africa
75cl Bottle
The Coterie wines draw upon a convergence of Wildeberg's tiny production pool of identified vineyards. Made with Wildeberg's cornerstone philosophies of minimal intervention winemaking, wild ferment and coarse filtration to capture the essence of the source vineyards and soils. A fresh and vibrant nose of crushed red fruits, hints of redcurrant and wild plum with lightly herbal notes, cloves and star anise. Plush and richly flavoured with ripe black fruit, a savoury mid palate and subtle, gently spicy oak backed by juicy acidity.
Amalaya Malbec
San Juan, Argentina
75cl Bottle
Amalaya is a delicious red wine from Argentina. This wine is produced in the San Juan Valley, located in the Mendoza region, known for its high-altitude vineyards and optimal growing conditions for Malbec grapes. My favourite Malbec of them all from Argentina.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich, with a velvety texture and a good balance of acidity and tannins. You'll taste flavours of ripe black fruits, such as blackberries and blackcurrants, as well as a touch of spice and oak. The wine finishes with a long and smooth aftertaste, leaving you with a pleasant sensation of fruitiness and complexity.
Le Combel De La Serre Malbec
Cahors, France
75cl Bottle
Bright and intense purple hue, bursting with bramble fruit and characteristic Malbec grip. Aged in cement vats, the wine offers a round, enveloping mouthfeel with velvety tannins, and a lively explosion of summer fruit, complemented by a long finish of chalky and spicy notes.
Pacheco Pereda Organic Fairtrade Malbec
Mendoza, Argentina
75cl bottle
Pacheco Pereda was established in Mendoza in 2010 by Alejandro Bulgheroni with the aim of extending sustainable viticulture in Argentina. This vision has resulted in one of Argentina’s largest organic-certified vineyard holdings. The name ‘Pacheco Pereda’ harks back to 20th century migrant families arriving in Argentina to establish farms on the sort of land that existed prior to industrial agriculture. This organic Malbec has a deep purple colour and fruit forward aromas of plums, cherries, and raspberries, with some violet notes. On the palate, it is medium bodied with round and velvety tannins, and a refreshing mouthfeel.
Cruz Malbec
Mendoza, Argentina
75cl Bottle
A bold, expressive, and deeply satisfying. A glass of Crux greets you with intense aromas of ripe plum, blackberry, and dark cherry, laced with hints of liquorice, nutmeg, and a touch of black pepper. The palate is rich and smooth, with a silky yet structured feel that delivers a perfect balance of ripe fruit, bright acidity, and velvety tannins. A touch of smoky oak and dark cocoa lingers on the finish, making this an irresistibly moreish red that begs for another sip.
Mont Rocher Malbec
Languedoc, France
75cl Bottle
Deep in colour with ripe plum, blackberries and cherries on the nose. This is rich and rounded wine with perfectly balanced tannins. The long finish is smooth and succulent.
