"Vesevo is situated in the Irpinian hills of Campania. Known as the 'Switzerland of the South', this is now one of Italy's most exciting wine producing areas. The vineyards are situated at between 450-700 metres above sea level and are subject to a constant cool breeze that blows off the Bay of Naples. Over the centuries, this same breeze has blown volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius inland, to give the soil here a poor, volcanic character.
The flavours obtained in the vineyard are then preserved in the winery by Manuel Barbone. The Aglianico is from the warmer area of Benevento and is a fine and affordable example of one of Italy's greatest grapes. The Taurasi is in a class of its own, as demonstrated by the awards that it has won in recent years.
As well as the high quality of the reds, the whites are standout wines from this producer. The Greco di Tufo is scented yet dry, with a lovely texture and a panoply of subtle flavours filling the glass. The Fiano is similarly impressive, if more restrained, while the Falanghina, from old vines, is the most immediate of the three. The white wines are fermented at New Zealand temperatures (13-14°C), resulting in much purer flavours being captured, and are definitive examples of their varieties."

The vineyards are situated at between 450 and 550 metres above sea level, and are always subject to a cool breeze that blows off the Bay of Naples. This same breeze has, over the centuries, blown volcanic ash from Vesuvius inland to give the soil here a poor, volcanic character. Indeed, the name Vesevo is the old name for Vesuvius. Fruit for this wine was sourced from five hectares of vineyard.
The flavours obtained in the vineyard are then preserved in the winery. The grapes were de-stemmed and gently crushed. Maceration took place for 20-25 days at a temperature of 26-28°C. The wine was barrel aged for 16 months in barriques.
Bright deep red in colour. An intense and complex wine with red berry flavours and light notes of vanilla. The tannins are firm and smooth, while the structure is clean and dry on the finish.
An excellent wine for simple meals of pasta flavoured with oil and red pepper. It pairs well with roasts of beef, lamb and goat.
