Shiraz is the name given to the dark-skinned Syrah grape when grown in Australia and selected pockets of the New World. Though genetically identical, the stylistic differences between Shiraz and Syrah are pronounced enough to consider them distinct varieties. Shiraz is so important to Australian viticulture that it is the most planted grape variety in the majority of Australian vineyards and has become virtually synonymous with the country's wine regions, and in particular the Barossa Valley.
The term Shiraz has its roots in the New World, although there is no one story about how it came to be named this. The prevailing style of Shiraz winemaking reflects its New World roots, though, tending toward bright fruit flavors – most frequently blueberries, blackcurrants and black cherries. Secondary notes of chocolate lend themselves well to the full-bodied texture of these wines, often accented by pepper and spicy inflections.
The Mimic Shiraz, Jumilla, Spain
Gold Medal International Wine Challenge
Jumilla, Spain
1 x 75cl Bottles
The Mimic Shiraz is unashamedly a wine which takes its style and inspiration from its Aussie counterparts and definitely sticks it to them with its big smooth, fruity style.
Made in the South Eastern Spanish region of Jumilla, the Mimic Shiraz grapes are carefully harvested at the moment of optimum ripeness before undergoing pressing to extract all the juice. The must then spends an extended period of time on its skins and temperature controlled fermentation to extract the maximum fruit freshness from the grapes. After fermentation, 80% of the wine spends 3 months in French oak, before blending with the unoaked wine and bottling.
The result is a great value bottle of red wine full of black plums, damsons, blackberry and licorice flavours with a touch of vanilla spice on the finish.
A wine which is delicious on its own or ideal with bbq flavours and grilled meats.
Aloe Tree Shiraz
South Africa
1 x 75cl
Grapes for this Shiraz were harvested at the cool of night in order to preserve the natural aromatics of the grape. Soft pressing and gentle fermentations were carried out in order to extract as much flavour without the astringency of harsh tannins. Medium ruby in colour with vivid aromas of sweet and spicy fruit, ageing in American oak barrels has added a hint of cocoa and vanilla, further enhancing the flavour profile. A lovely drinking wine at this price point and a great wine to enjoy with BBQ's, pizza or steak.
