Description:
We can’t reveal the name of this prestigious Chateau but we can tell you that Jean Claude Berrouet, of Chateau Petrus is behind it! Jean Claude, who has endearingly been called  ‘The Poet of Pomerol’ was the winemaker at Chateau  Petrus from 1964 to 2008, a whole 44 years. He was also winemaker at Dominus in Napa Valley in California and his style has remained the same throughout, prioritising the harmony between tannic structure and aromatic expression. Since then we has made wine with his brother Jean Francois and his sons, in and outside of France, with great success. His son Olivier became the winemaker at Chateau Petrus after he left! He has become a mentor for them and the many other winemakers around the world he has inspired, who talk about how he has taught them the importance of elegance in wine.

Bordeaux (abv 14%) from Jean Claude, with 89% Merlot. He is considered the master of the merlot grape, and while Chateau Petrus is made with 100% Merlot, he has crafted this wine with 89% Merlot, 7% Malbec and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Let’s be clear, Chateau Petrus this is not, but at 288 times cheaper than a bottle of Chateau Petrus (€5,200 per bottle) we are pretty sure that Chateau Petrus is not 288 times as good!

The vintage here is 2019 – part of a trilogy of top vintages in Bordeaux between 2018, 2019 and 2020. It was considered the best decade in Bordeaux for great vintages. According to James Suckling wine critic, we will be debating what vintage is best for many years He goes on to say ‘At the moment I like 2019 the best because it produced so many ‘real Bordeaux’. The 2019 reds have the character and nature of what Bordeaux can only do with cabernet or merlot.  They are rich and structured, yet they retain wonderful freshness and brightness.

Winemakers tasting note:

‘Deep, dense and tinged with purple glints. Nose is tight enough but will open in time. The aromatic bouquet, with fruity and spicy notes, is complex. Some aromas of black berries. In the mouth, the attack is rich, intense and lively. The wine offers a nice length. It is hot, solar and spicy. The aftertaste of black fruits and fresh fruit lingers satisfyingly. The grain is fine, the tannins are silky. It is an aromatic wine, supple, seductive with some woody notes too. It is elegant and balanced with great harmony’
