Barón de Ley is one of the best-known names in modern Rioja. The estate was founded in 1985, when a group of experienced Rioja winemakers and investors bought a derelict 16th-century Benedictine monastery near Mendavia in Navarra, restored it and planted the surrounding land with vines. The idea behind it was unusual for the region: a château on the French model, in which vineyard, cellar and brand are held in one pair of hands and the wines are made exclusively from the estate's own grapes. Today the group farms more than 600 hectares of its own vineyards and is known above all for long-aged Reserva and Gran Reserva wines.

The château principle in Rioja: the wines come from the estate's own vineyards rather than from purchased fruit – rather the exception in this region.

Tasting Note:
 After a powerful attack the sensation of soft, supple volume gradually extends across the palate for a creamy finish. The aftertaste reminds you of the red berry fruit mingled with hints of wild herbs.

Food Pairing: It is a great wine for Sunday roast, stews, goose or turkey.

In Rioja this wine is enjoyed with one of their most notorious and simple dishes: Patatas a la riojana, a hearty potatoes and chorizo-based stew.
