Over the course of the last 12 months, White Burgundy has incresaed steadily in price, owing to a harvest that was down by between 70% and 90% in 2021. It jhas meant price increases of up to €20 per bottle in some cases and these are wines that were perhaps €40 per bottle beforehand. The increases have forced us to look for the outstanding qualities that lie in the wines from this region, from elsewhere. Iona Chardonnay

Wine journalist, Jancis Robinson recently tasted this Chardonnay at a London wine tasting. She said of it:
'Pale greenish straw. Pure and straight and arguably less distinctive than the two Sauvignon Blanc-based wines from Iona. But the same lightly reductive, liquorice scents on the nose as fine white burgundy. Very crisp and fine. Very precise and youthful. Quite long after crystalline structure'

Cerro Las curras Vinedo Singular

This wine was the very first white wine permitted under the new Single Vineyard classification system in Rioja in 2019. The grapes all come from one spectacular plot, and the wine has a linear freshness and acidity that is stark and beautiful. Again it is delicate and special, with a power behind it that demands being served in the finest restaurants in the world. A very special wine indeed. 

Antinori Bramito Chardonnay

Italian Powerhouse Wine Family Antinori are behind this wine. They are more known for their reds, but their bramito Chardonnay is one of the finest Italian wines we have tried all year. It sells for under €30 and by comparison toany French Burgundy should be three times that price. it is gently oaked for 6 months, and there are subtle toast, brioche and caramel flavours on the palate. A really wonderful wine indeed. 

Domaine de Montine Egerie Roussanne
Grignan des Adhemar, Rhone Valley, France

Perhaps the most interesting wine of the case - this has a weight that the other wines don't have - It is rich and unxious, yet has a freshness  and acidity that cuts the oilyness and brings the flavours in your mouth to a crescendo, an explosion of flavour and fruit.

This wine has received over 95 points from James Halliday Wine critics in Australia. It is a winery that has won award after award in the last 12 months and they are renowned for trying new things and planting new varietals. It is made with the Roussanne grape again. Two Masters of Wine oreside over the Thistledown Wine Company and they know a thing or two about making phenomenal wines. Proof that Australian wines can live alongside the very best wines in the world. It is that good!

Latour are the largest family owned negociant in Burgundy, and the first to recognise that they needed to bring their winemaking expertise to the South of France where they could produce wines at a fraction of the price of wines in Burgundy. By making wines with the same winemaking team, the same barrel coopers and the same expertise, they have managed to make incredibly similar Burgundian styled Chardonnay at a fraction of the price of it's Burgundy Counterparts!
