Description:
Château Palmer’s 2025 vintage stands out as one of the estate’s greatest recent successes, driven by perfectly managed sunny conditions and the velvety character so characteristic of the estate. Following a mild and relatively dry winter, the growing season began early, with budbreak observed as early as late March. This early start was maintained throughout the season. Flowering, which was rapid and uniform starting on May 14, led to excellent fruit set despite naturally limited fertility following the previous vintage. Beginning in mid-June, heat and drought set in for an extended period, resulting in a significant water deficit. This climatic stress shaped the vintage’s structure: the berries remained small, thick, and concentrated. Veraison began as early as July 7 and proceeded in a particularly uniform manner. However, a few timely rains in late July and then at the end of summer helped rebalance the ripening process, softening the skins and preserving the grapes’ freshness. August, marked by several days exceeding 35°C, confirmed the vintage’s sunny character without ever upsetting the balance. The old Merlot vines, particularly those on the Brauzes plateau, withstood these extreme conditions remarkably well and imparted to the wine that deep, velvety texture that is Palmer’s signature. The harvest was among the earliest in the wine estate’s recent history: the Merlots were harvested starting September 4, followed by the Cabernets as early as September 11. The grapes were in excellent health, fully ripe, and remarkably well-balanced.
The blend, dominated by Merlot (55%), complemented by 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot, gives rise to a spectacular wine of harmony and sensuality. The nose reveals great aromatic depth centered on ripe black fruits, violet, sweet spices, and a refined hint of graphite. The palate impresses with its velvety fullness, silky density, and vibrant fruit. Despite the vintage’s natural richness, the balance remains masterful thanks to perfectly integrated freshness and tannins of remarkable finesse. The long, luminous, and briny finish places this 2025 in the lineage of the very great modern Palmers, alongside the 2009, 2010, 2015, and 2016 vintages.
'Iris, violets, and roses might start the aromatics, but that's not all there is, as you also find cherries, currants, dried flowers, and hints of spice, which are all front and center. The palate, however, is the star of the show. The combination of vibrant, sweet, ripe, clean, and pure fruits, coupled with its vivid energy, drives the long, seamless, elegant, and sensuous finish. There is concentration and power, but everything is so refined that it is not something you notice. The finish starts off slowly, building into a crescendo of perfectly ripe fruits. The key to the vintage was the late-August rains, which allowed for lower ABV and better fruit maturity. The wine blends 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 41% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot. 13.5 % ABV, 3.7 pH. The yields were small at 20 hectoliters. The harvest took place from September 4 to September 25. This is the earliest start to a harvest in the history of the estate. Drink from 2030-2070'
