In 1890, the Duke of Aosta visited Pontassieve after learning of a hidden gem in the cellar of the newly established Ruffino, a rising winery known for its Chianti. Impressed, he made Ruffino the royal supplier.
In 1927, the inaugural Riserva Ducale vintage was crafted as a homage to the wine-loving Duke of Aosta. Two decades later, in 1947, Ruffino commemorated the exceptional vintage by introducing the inaugural Riserva Ducale Oro, heralding the concept of Gran Selezione ahead of its time. Its potential for decades of aging is matched only by its historical significance.
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Riserva Ducale Oro di Ruffino is born in the vineyards of the Ruffino di Gretole and Santedame estates, in the most prestigious production area of Chianti Classico, the Conca d'Oro. Born in 1947, to commemorate a great harvest, this wine is produced only in the best vintages, when the grapes meet the company's high quality standards.
It is mainly produced with Sangiovese grapes and with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, harvested and selected entirely by hand. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28 ° C for 10 days. The wine is aged for about 36 months in concrete and steel tanks, for 12 months in oak barriques and for a further 6 months in bottle, before being marketed.
