Domaine Glantenay, Volnay 1er Cru `Les Santenots
Country: France Region: Burgundy
Category: Red Wine Color: Red Varietal: Pinot Noir/Nero
Producer: Domaine Glantenay
Guillaume Glantenay is the sixth generation of his family to run this domaine, which he took over from his father in 2013. His father still works the estate’s eight hectares of vineyard, of which four are in Volnay, while Guillaume runs the new cuverie. For those who remember the wines from his father’s time, Guillaume has brought a greater elegance to the wines, and a lovely purity of fruit. He uses about 15-20% whole bunch to lift the perfumes and low toast oak to support rather than mask these aromas. The Bourgogne Pinot Noir, fermented and aged solely in stainless steel, is aromatic and supple. His Pommard 2015 is attractively perfumed with soft tannins, good length and nicely restrained oak, with only 20% of the blend seeing new oak. His Volnay 1er Cru `Les Santenots’, from a chalky vineyard on the border with Meursault, is a step up again. The wine, 30% of which was aged in new oak, is beautifully scented, with hints of rose petals on the nose and plentiful tannins on the palate that are nicely balanced by the sweet fruit. The Santenots vineyard continues into Meursault, where Glantenay has a small patch of vines. His 2015 Meursault ‘Les Santenots’ is clean on the nose with a hint of fragrant white flowers and citrus fruit, good weight on the palate with nice acidity and beautifully balanced oak on the finish, which is long and lingering. Guillaume’s grandfather married a woman from Chambolle, so the domaine has long had vineyards in this village, which have been rented out. Guillaume took back some of these vineyards in 2013, and has made an excellent debut wine. It has lifted perfumes of red fruit and rose petals, nice sweetness on the mid-palate, good tannins and excellent length. Like all the other wines that we have shipped, it is an exciting debut from Guillaume Glantenay, who we are confident will make this into one of Burgundy’s most exciting domaines.

Vineyards:
"The vineyard is located on the boundary of Volnay and Meursault. Soils here are a mixture of stony clay and limestone and the vines are guyot trained. The crops are tended to by hand and are consistently monitored during the year in order to keep the amount of treatments required to a minimum.
The particularity of the Santenots, situated exclusively in the village of Meursault, is that it is called “Meursault Santenots” if the vines are planted with Chardonnay grapes, and “Volnay Santenots” if they’re planted with Pinot Noir grapes."
Vinification:
Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine was matured in 30% new oak barrels for between 15 and 18 months.
Tasting Notes:
Cherry is the overwhelming perfume on this Premier Cru. Black cherries are supported by blackberries and raspberries. Lovely tannins on the palate, and beautiful finesse.
Food Suggestion: Will pair well with roast chicken, turkey or guineafowl.
Closure: Natural Cork ABV: 13% Acidity [g/l]: 6.12
