Grenache has a wonderfully diverse flavour profile that changes from site to site and throughout its life in the bottle. This sensitivity to a site attracted owners David Gleave MW and John Ratcliffe to McLaren Vale when they first started Willunga 100 in 2004. At the time, few people took Grenache seriously, but they saw great potential in the old bush vines of McLaren Vale, particularly from the Blewitt Springs and Clarendon sub-regions. Today, David and John's vision is to make contemporary McLaren Vale wines with a strong focus on Grenache. With Renae Hirsch as Winemaker, our wines aim to be an authentic expression from each of our unique sites.
The focus on single sites has brought critical success to Willunga 100. The 2021 ‘Smart’ won the Grenache trophy at Australia’s National Wine Show in 2023. This is the second time a Willunga Grenache has been honoured with a trophy at the show, as in 2017, the 2015 ‘Trott’ took home Best Alternative Variety. Awards success continued in 2024, with Willunga 100 winning two of the three gold medals awarded in the Grenache class at the National Wine Show for the 2022 McLaren Vale Grenache and 2022 ‘Trott’. The 2023 ‘Smart’ also triumphed at the 2024 Melbourne Royal Wine Awards, winning Best Grenache trophy and being named one of the top 6 contenders for the legendary Jimmy Watson trophy.

Tasting Notes:
A layered and floral nose of rose petal, bay leaves and rocket, along with bright cranberry and cherry fruit. The palate is elegant and complex with characters of savoury cherry and berry fruit, hints of warm spice, garrigue and slate, supported by vibrant acidity. It is layered with fine tannins and lingering finish.
Food Suggestion: Great with all manner of barbequed food, from steaks to sausages to big mushrooms or skewered aubergines.
