Capezzana Trefiano Carmignano 2016
Country: Italy Region: Tuscany
Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Canaiolo
Vintage: 2016 Colour: Red Style: Dry
The Contini Bonacossi family run the Villa di Trefiano estate with the same respect for tradition and attention to detail seen at Capezzana. In 1979, the late Vittorio Contini Bonacossi decided to produce a wine exclusively from this estate, offering a different interpretation of Carmignano.
The Carmignano Riserva blends Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Canaiolo and is aged for around 18 months in French tonneaux to give an opulent yet elegant wine. The 2021 vintage won ‘Best in Show’ at the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards and was described by the judges as “one of the most generous of this year's Top 50 reds, yet without sacrificing the nerve and nuance that seems to be a birthright of fine Tuscan red wines”.
The Villa is surrounded by five hectares of vineyards which are located in the Carmignano DOCG. The Villa di Trefiano is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are situated at approximately 200 metres above sea level, facing south, south-east and south-west. Soils are schistous clay with limestone. The 22-year-old vines are planted at a density of 4,440 per hectare and are cordon spur
Fermentation lasted seven days and took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Temperatures did not exceed 28ºC during fermentation. After 13 days of maceration the wine was aged for 18 months in French tonneaux barrique, a mixture of new and up to 2-year old oak. The wine spent a further year in bottle before release.
Tasting Notes:
This wine is deep ruby red in colour. On the nose, there are refined notes of cherry and raspberry that mingle with herbal notes and spice. Structured yet elegant, the Trefiano is soft yet firm with supple tannins and well-balanced acidity. Delicious raspberry, cherry combine with undertones of spice into a long and persistent finish.
