Description:
Wildeberg (‘wild mountain’) is literally a place ‘on the edge’, of Franschhoek and the mountains themselves. Formally an equestrian farm, the land has never before been planted under vine but this wild and magical mountain has an undefinable energy .
The fact that only 10% of the property itself can be planted underlines the wild character of this place.
Wildeberg is our small farm in Franschhoek. Wildeberg Terroirs is an expression of the most exciting vineyard blocks we work with in the wider Coastal Region. This is a release of a Sauvignon Blanc from the steep slopes of the Simonsberg.
A single site Chenin Blanc from old bush vines grown on the Smuts Block which is old, dry-grown bush vines rooted in the rocky, granite seam outcrops that surface rarely in the otherwise deep, sandy loams between Table Mountain and Paarl. Hand-harvested bush vine fruit naturally fermented back at the farm at Wildeberg. As little work as possible is required in order to capture the site-specific energy of this fruit
Tasting Note:
A nose of warm sand gives way to a wave of broad blood orange, pithy texture and a taut, wiry seam of granite texture in the finish.
Food Matches: Pairs well with a variety of different dishes, but excellent with oysters, game, and grilled fish. Also nice with Duck à l’Orange and asparagus dishes.
