Bodegas Roda Sela
Rioja, Spain
2 x 75cl Bottles
Bodegas Roda was developed in the late 1980s. From the heart of the Haro, overlooking the Ebro River, Roda fuses tradition and modernity with its 19th century cellar and 21st century Bodega. Through meticulous and exacting research, Roda have perfected the art of Tempranillo, selecting only 20 individual clones to cultivate from over 552 identified. Head winemaker Agustin Santolaya, uses bush vines of between 15 and 30 years old. The wine is dominated by Tempranillo but has a touch of Graciano. Yields are kept low to encourage phenolic maturity, which results in a concentration of intense aromas and depth of flavour complexity on the palate. Following 19 days of maceration, Sela is aged for 12 months in 100% semi-new French oak. This delivers a much more modern style of Rioja; fruit lead, with well-integrated and subtle oak.
Bodegas Navajas Reserva
Rioja, Spain
2 x 75cl Bottles
This Reserva is produced from grapes selected from the older bush vines which yield very small amounts of concentrated yet balanced fruit. Hand harvested at optimum ripeness for each site, they are then transported to the winery in small baskets and unloaded by hand into the winery. The barrels are 60% French and 40% American with approximately 35% new and the rest 1 to 2 years. The wine is held in barrel for a minimum of 18 months prior to barrel selection and blending to make the final wine, which is then assembled and bottled for further ageing of 12 months or longer.
Bodegas Lan Xtreme Crianza
Rioja, Spain
2 x 75 Bottles
Bodegas LAN is a relative newcomer to the Rioja scene, having been founded in 1972. The name “LAN” is an acronym for the three provinces that make up Rioja, Logroño, Alava, and Navarra.
LAN produces some of the most consistent, value-driven examples of Rioja on the market, and is also is an established leader on the premium side. LAN’s iconic 72 hectare Viña Lanciano vineyard sits on a breathtaking natural meander along the Ebro river and is the basis for most of the company’s top bottlings.
The spirit of experimentation and innovation permeates the culture at LAN, and winemaker María Barúa is continually pushing the limits and preconceptions people have of the region.
Artuke
Rioja, Spain
2 x 75cl
Since 1991 Miguel & Conchi Blanco have been making wines under the Artuke name: This is derived from the names of their two sons Arturo & Kike who are also involved in the family business. Bodegas Artuke is a 22 hectare estate in Banos de Ebro, Rioja Alavesa. This region is cooler than other parts of Rioja due to the influence of the Atlantic breeze.
Wild rose and ripe cherry aromas and flavors, with crushed red and purple berries, soft earth, wild green herbs, salty licorice, and cherry cola.
Izadi Rioja Blanco
Rioja, Spain
2 x 75cl Bottles
Izadi is based in Villabuena in Rioja Alavesa, the highest part of Rioja. The hillside winery (whose precipitous slope allows for gravity assisted production) was founded in 1987 by Gonzalo Antón as a modern breakaway from the traditional style of wine produced by other members of his family. As his son Lalo, who now runs the estate, says: "the whole concept of Izadi really started around wanting to produce wine to satisfy the needs of our friends over a meal". Izadi produces modern, international wines that are true to their roots and a natural expression of the area.
This wine is straw yellow in colour with youthful tones. With succulent citrus and yellow stone fruit on both the nose and the palate, this well-balanced wine combines a richness and freshness frequently missing in white Rioja.
