We've been importing wine for just over 20 years directly from some of our favourite vineyards. In that time, we have found new producers to work with, dropped some others along the way, and come back to some of them in between. The wines we import today are ones we are extremely happy wit, consistent in their winemaking and the value their wines bring to you, our customers day in day out. The Flagship Case is a selection of some of our favourites, not our best, just our favourites. These are the wines that represent wonderful value and they are classics within our range. We hope you enjoy them.
Georges Vigouroux Vassal De Mercues Malbec
2 x 75cl
Mendoza's rightly celebrated for its fruit-packed Malbec. But Cahors is where you'll discover its more refined, elegant brother. Powerful flavours of black cherry, redcurrants and spices will indulge your palate to make every sip more inviting. Powerful flavours of black cherry, redcurrant and spices alongside a silky smooth coating of tannins to give this wine its richness. Mature cheddar, Gouda and blue veined cheeses beckon you while holding a glass of this glorious Cahor Malbec. A World class wine.
Principe Mathematica Alemany i Corrió
2 x 75cl
In the little town of Vilafranca del Penedes in Cataluña, Irene and Laurent are challenging the traditional perception of DO Penedes wine. Converting their vineyards from the typical Penedes high yields and abandoning all forms of chemical treatment and fertilizers, they follow basic organic practices. Much of the construction and equipping of their cellar was modest and homemade, including building their own tanks. Production is tinyl, yet as they identify further small vineyard sites their range has extended to include distinctive wines from the indigenous varietal Xarel-lo, which they choose to do extended fermentation with, using indigenous yeast and it is then left on its lees to increase the richness and compexity. A Wonderfull rich white wine.
Chateau Bellerive Medoc
Medoc, Cru Bourgeois, France,
2 x 75cl
Four generations of the Perrin family own and run this estate. Château Bellerive consists of 14 hectares in the north of the Médoc, opposite the Gironde estuary. The vines are planted on three plateaux made up of clay and gravel. The grapes are picked by hand, thereby facilitating the selection of ripe bunches. Vinification is in concrete, which has the advantage of protecting the must from thermal shock during fermentation. Ageing is carried out in oak, which enhances the ageing potential of the wine. The mix of grapes here makes for a complex wine. The Merlot brings red fruit and supple tannins, the Cabernets bring intense colour and the Petit Verdot adds a touch of spice, which is enhanced by the barrel ageing
Bodegas Navajas Crianza
Haro, Rioja, Spain
2 x 75cl
This smooth, plump Rioja wins pride of place as one of our members' favourite reds vintage after vintage. We love its combination of vanilla-infused flavour from high-quality oak ageing and vibrant red-fruit notes. It is a small Bodegas in the heart of Rioja that we have been working with for just over a year now, and it one of the finest Rioja houses we have found. It is small, so production doesn’t favour large distributors. Best that this one stays under wraps, so that we can all continue enjoying the fruits of the Navajas family’s hard labour, for the few people that get to enjoy it!
Iona Vineyards Chardonnay
Elgin, South Africa
2 x 75cl
Iona is A Favourite wine of renowned wine critic Jancis Robinson. It is also a favourite of mine. This is elgbant, subtle, clean and buttery chardonnay at its very best. It is a wonderful wine with slight reductive notes. A very fine clean and pale wine with lovely length and hints of spice on the finish. Winemaker Andrew Gunn is seen as one of the iconic figures in South African winemaking and he has a fine reputation for being one of the best employers there too, looking after not just his staff impeccably, but their whole family’s at the same time.He considers them all, part of the Iona Family, a lovely story.
The Chardonnay vineyard is the coolest vineyard in the Cape, 420m above sea-level, high above the picturesque Elgin Valley. An extremely long growing season, harvesting up to 2 months after Stellenbosch, results in diverse, complex flavours and uniquely fresh and elegant wines. Long renowned for their Sauvignon blanc, their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; it was recently awarded 5 stars in Platter magazine.
Tenute del Pojo Imperivium Riserva Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
Terre di Chieti, Italy
2 x 75cl
This is a spectacular wine. Think Ripasso, Think Amarone. Intense, with spice and leather notes, with pure rich generous fruit. It is vinified in the traditional way, then aged for 18 months in small casks and left to rest in bottle for 7 months before release. A spectacular wine with all the depth and weight expected of a flagship wine from Di Camillo. This is the top wine from the estate, and it offers great value as well.
