There’s a certain sense of relief when the grape harvest starts to wind down and comes to a close. This year was exceptional vintage wise, although some would say that was the least that was deserved after a very strange start to 2020.
This is a very special vintage for Georges Dubeouf after the passing of M Georges Dubeouf last year. Spring was very hot and grapes ripened earlier than they have in previous vintages in the vineyard. As a result harvest was in August time rather than September.
(In line with French law Beaujolais Nouveau cannot be released on sale until the third Thursday in November each year).
Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2020 is available at WineOnline.ie at a price of RRP: €90 for 6 or €180 for 12 bottles.
More than 60 million bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau, representing one third of the total wine production of the Beaujolais region, are produced each year. Georges Duboeuf is known for its popularisation and production of Beaujolais wines, leading to Dubeouf’s nickname of Le Roe du Beaujolais (The King of Beaujolais) or sometimes Pape du Beaujolais (Pope of Beaujolais).
Made from 100% Gamay grapes, which have thinner skins than most grapes, causing a lower tannin level, Beaujolais Nouveau is the most popular ‘vin de primeur’, fermented for just a few weeks and then officially released for sale. By law, Beaujolais Grapes must be harvested by hand and grown on individual, free standing vines. Beaujolais Nouveau is harvested, produced, bottled and shipped within two months. It owes its easy drinkability to a winemaking process called carbonic maceration, or whole-berry fermentation. This technique preserves the fresh, fruity quality of the wine.
Beaujolais Nouveau is known internationally as the wine of friendship and hospitality.
