There are 14 villages that make up the Côtes de Thongue appellation which is 30 miles west of the Mediterranean town of Montpellier. Its designation is only vin de pays, which in France means basic “country wine,” but estates like Domaine des Montarels represent the new wave of independent producers that are showing the area’s true potential. When Dhanya and Nova Collette bought the property in 2005, the grapes from the vineyards had been sold to the local co-op for generations. Trusting in the quality of their fruit and in modern winemaking practices, the couple released their first vintage in 2007. Since then the venture has gone from strength to strength in a not so well known, up-and-coming region that typifies the emergence of the Languedoc Roussillon region as a whole.
Ageing Potential: Drink 4 years.
Smoothly textured with good acidity, this well integrated French Chardonnay is drinking perfectly now. An inviting bouquet of pineapple and pear is enhanced with light vanilla and mineral notes. Subtle tropical flavors have hints of baking spice, toast and butterscotch.
