1. Champagne Moet & Chandon – Get things Started
Start the day with Champagne for aperatif. This Champagne has some bottle age so the toast and brioche flavours really linger here. They are deep flavours that push this champagne well above some of the grand marque champagnes that we all know in our eyes. Celebrate Christmas by starting the day with a glass of evervescent bubbles in your glass.
2. Sancerre Ladoucette Comtes Lafond – The Starter White
Since the late eighteenth century, the family of the Counts Lafond has had the largest and most renowned vineyards of Pouilly Fumé. Patrick Baron de Ladoucette, great grand son of Lafond Counts, continued this tradition of high quality and produced this great white wine Ladoucette, global benchmark Sauvignon.
3. Chateau de la Gaurre 'Oppidium' – The Main Course White
"A rich and luxurious wine. Brilliant yellow-green colour with green reflections. On the nose mineral and complex aromas are reminiscent of lemon and white flower, together with vegetal hints such as asparagus or artichoke and marine notes. On the palate, the first impression is clear-cut and sharp. Long on the aftertaste, with fruity as well as mineral flavours; becomes slightly honey-scented when the wine is more evolved". Classic structured white wine – I could think of little more apt, than Chablis with Christmas Dinner.
4. Vina Arana Gran Reserva Rioja 2014 – The Starter Red
Followers of this much admired estate will know that there is no Gran Reserva 904 until 2023, at which point we will see the 2015 vintage hit the market. Until then, fruit that would ordinarily go in to the 904 has been put in to the Vina Arana, the first tier of their three Gran Reserva bottlings. In the case of 2014, there is no 890 either, thus the Vina Arana includes all the best quality fruit from that year, producing a Gran Reserva of exceptional quality at an affordable price. This wine has the potential to elevate the Christmas Dinner all on its own. Just add great company and great food.
5. Chateau Laforge Saint Emilion Grand Cru- The Main Course Red
James Suckling: 91 Points
Lots of tar, blackberry and earthy character with hints of dried meat. Full body, silky tannins and a fresh finish. Savory wine. Better after 2016.
Wine Advocate: 90 Points
Another project of Jonathan Maltus, the 2011 Laforge (100% old vine Merlot) offers a sweet kiss of kirsch, chocolate and licorice along with a deep ruby color, a fleshy, ripe, hedonistic personality and 7-8 years of drinkability. This lush, medium-bodied wine is again impressive.
6. Offley 10 Year Old Tawny Port – The Cheeseboard
Offley Porto 10-Year-Old has an intense Tawny colour with brick-like tones. It's elegant and his complex bouquet is characterised by flavours of ripe fruit, marmalade and nuts, with notes of vanilla, raisins and jelly. In the mouth, the balance between the richness of the grapes´ natural sugars and its tannins provide the wine with a fine structure and a delicate yet complex finish.
Enjoy it with cheese or good friends. For the richer wine loving people in your house for Christmas, this is a port they’ll love.
From all the team at WineOnline.ie we wish you a very Happy Christmas. It has been our pleasure picking and selecting these wines for you to enjoy with your friends and family and we hope you enjoy them all.
