When we tasted the 2024 at the estate in April, the Chateau explained their take on the vintage, choosing the word ’The Rebel’ to describe the year’s tough climatic conditions. This si Hubert de Bouard’s 40th vintage making this wine and the 2024 vintage has a taste for adversity and challenge, two powerful motivators that historically have allowed Angelus to produce truly great wines.
This is the 10th year father and daughter have made the wine together. The alcohol level is low at 13.5% and there is great tension and finesse in the wine.

"Wine Advocate 90-93/100
“A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, cropped at a very honorable 40 hectoliters per hectare, the 2024 Angélus has turned out well, offering up aromas of dark berries, minty plums and violet, framed by a deft touch of toasty oak. Medium-bodied, ample and suave, it's polished and textural, with sweet but present tannins and creditable persistence on the finish."

" Vivid plum colour, cedar and gunsmoke on the opening, skilfully and carefully put together, slim through the palate, but this is very clearly finessed, sleek, with quiet confidence, and pumice stone texture, cherry pit, squid ink, damson, rosebud, Cabernet Franc dominant in terms of its floral aromatics. 39hl/h yield, 40th anniversary vintage of Hubert de Böuard. This will for sure be ready to drink earlier than many vintages of Angélus, but it is well structured and will age for many years to come. No chaptilisation. "

Following a mild, wet winter, spring was unusually rainy too – except for a brief interlude during flowering – all the way until June. The old proverb “August makes the must” once again confirmed what our ancestors always said. Dry and sunny July and August brought back smiles, and our grapes gained taste, substance and character. September, though more uncertain, enabled us to ensure a reasonably abundant harvest and to pick some very nice grapes. The deep, purple colour bears witness to the weather conditions in Bordeaux this vintage. The nose, initially bright and opulent, opens up to reveal the great ripeness of the Merlot grapes, before the delicacy and complexity of the Cabernet Franc comes through, with hints of spice, menthol and flowers. Violet and peony enrich the peppery nuances. The palate, juicy, full of flavour and energetic, instantly reveals dense, rich tannins with the texture of cashmere. The oak, a discreet support for the wine, rounds off the well-balanced structure, a guarantee of very good ageing potential.
