PL Award 1: GOLD - IWC 2016
Country: Italy Region: Tuscany Vintage: 2011
Category: Red Wine Color: Red
Producer: Cantina di Montalcino
"The strength of this producer lies in its ability to draw fruit from all over the zone, enabling the power of the wines from the south to be moderated by the elegance and aromatics found in those from the north. This results in wines with a freshness allied to a power and structure that is very typical of good Brunello.
The Cantina di Montalcino was founded in 1975 and acquired by the co-operative Cantine Leonardo in 1990. There are 90 associate growers whose combined vineyards cover 108 hectares. The same ethos of quality that imbues the Cantine Leonardo is present at the Cantina di Montalcino.
In addition to the wines from Montalcino, they also produce a couple of great value wines under the Poggio al Sasso label. A crisp, aromatic and unoaked Vermentino is complemented by a ripe, juicy yet structured Sangiovese."
Winemaker: Riccardo Pucci and Paolo Vagaggini
The vineyards are located in a hilly area in the commune of Montalcino, close to Siena. The estate has approximately 160 hectares under vine, planted at an average density of 3,500 vines per hectare. The average altitude is between 250-350 metres above sea level.
Maceration on the skins took place during fermentation and lasted approximately 15-20 days, together with frequent, gentle pumping over. The fermentation temperature was between 30-32°C. Controlling the temperature encouraged the extraction of good colour and soft, ripe tannins. The wine was matured in Slavonian oak casks for three years before bottling.
Purple-red in colour, the wine is intensely perfumed with fruit aromas including blackberries, blackcurrants and cherries. On the palate the wine is full bodied with tremendous depth and richness, attractive fruit and well balanced acidity.
Food Suggestion: This is the classic wine for roast meat dishes, both wild game and more traditional roasts. It also makes a perfect partner for mature cheeses, especially Pecorino or Parmesan style cheese.
Closure: Natural Cork ABV: 14%
