The estate was founded in 1985, when a group of experienced Rioja winemakers and investors bought a derelict 16th-century Benedictine monastery near Mendavia in Navarra, restored it and planted the surrounding land with vines. The idea behind it was unusual for the region: a château on the French model, in which vineyard, cellar and brand are held in one pair of hands and the wines are made exclusively from the estate's own grapes.
