We have pulled together some Vintage Aussie Greats whilst making sure we include the varieties that the Country is famed for. There is little doubting that certain varieties do better than others in Australia and this case celebrates that.
Peter Lehman 'Portrait Series' Cabernet Sauvignon
Barossa Valley
2 x 75cl
The colour is deep red with a dense black centre, and the nose gives tantalising aromas of chocolate, blackcurrants, with hints of nutmeg, cloves and star anise. It is a beautifully rich Cabernet with superb depth of seamless fruit. A supple wine, it is lively and inviting and finishes satisfyingly firm.
The Stump Jump Riesling
d'Arenberg, McLaren Vale, Australia
2 x 75cl
Riesling gives the finesse and class to this wine, Sauvignon Blanc adds loads of aromatics, and the Marsanne and Roussanne provide complexity, weight and nuttiness to the palate.
The resulting wine is an exotic mix of citrus, stone fruits, passionfruit, guava and tinned pineapple which develops into a long savoury, nutty like finish.
The mouthfeel is rich and luscious without being overly oily, kept in check by a fine line of mineral acidity.
Little Yering Shiraz
Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia
2 x 75cl
A Burgundian style Shiraz if ever such a thing existed. This is delicate and light, owing to the cool climate grapes. Aromas and flavours of ripe juicy dark fruits such as blueberry and blackberry mixed in with more savoury notes of cracked black pepper. A concentrated, full-bodied wine with a spicy finish.
Victoria Park Shiraz
Organic & Vegan, South Australia
2 x 75cl
Bright, medium to deep crimson in colour, opening with violets, sea spray and fresh Mediterranean herbs. There is a lovely hit of blueberry, a hint of black tea and the quintessential Australian note of dried eucalypt. When you first try the wine, there is an initial burst of fresh fruit sweetness, much like blackcurrant pastilles. This sweetness is balanced beautifully with savoury notes of fresh herbs and a lovely acid that compliments the blueberry Danish opulence. The wine is typically structural with focused, yet friendly tannins. This is a fresh and vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon. A lovely match with traditional or vegetarian homemade lasagne.
De Bortoli Windy Peak Pinot Noir
Yarra Valley, Australia
2 x 75cl
Aromas of red berries, violets, earthy, forest and herbs. Textural, elegant flavours of cherry and strawberry on the palate with soft tannins, medium weight, quite a plump style. Ideal with pan roasted chicken with aromatic spices.
Yalumba Y Series, Unwooded Chardonnay
Organic & Vegan, South Eastern Australia,
2 x 75cl
This Chardonnay depicts the Cape Barren Goose, a symbol of an endangered species. Over the years, many birds and animals have sought and found refuge in Yalumba’s sanctuary, land dedicated to native wildlife rehabilitation. Fermentation by natural or ‘wild’ yeast, naturally present in the vineyard has helped shape this wine; think minerality, grapefruit and pineapple flavours.
