This wine is impressively fresh and intense, with an understated brilliance that sets it apart from more exuberant Sauvignons. The Cloudy Bay estate lies in Wairau Valley, Marlborough, at the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. It takes its name from the most easterly point of the valley, named Cloudy Bay by the explorer Captain James Cook when he first discovered the region in 1770. Here, the well-drained soil is stony, glacial and rich in minerals, soaking up rainfall like a sponge. An easterly wind ensures cool night temperatures to temper the hot summer days, with a large diurnal range slowing ripening and allowing the grapes to accumulate flavour. This, along with the low yields that Gallo achieves and his proclivity for picking grapes once fully mature, results in single-vineyard wines of great intensity and richness. As a result, Gallo releases the Vie di Romans wines a year later than the local norm. The Sauvignon Blanc comes from the ‘Piere’ vineyard and is a round, fuller style of Sauvignon with a freshness characteristic of this region. All their wines have the hallmark of great individuality, something that really marks Gianfranco Gallo apart from the crowd.

Winemaker: Gianfranco Gallo and Antonio Pelos

Vineyards:
Fruit comes from the 12.5-hectare Piere vineyard in the commune of Mariano del Friuli, which sits 33 meters above sea level. Taste the wines and find out why we feel that way. The Sauvignon Blancs are lifted and fresh, their varietal character derived from growing the grapes in the right place and picking them when they are ripe and not, as many in Chile seem to do, by picking them green in order to ensure an herbaceous character which displays what they think is the mark of the varietal. The Merlots, Malbecs and Cabernets have lovely colour, intensity and definition, and supple tannins. This is rare in Chile.

So how do they do it? Not surprisingly, in the vineyard. They learned, when they started producing Montes Alpha in 1987, that they needed balanced yields and to harvest when the grapes were ripe. They adapted these practices to all their vineyards and the results are startling. Montes' own vineyards cover 75% of their requirements. The other 25% of fruit is produced on vineyards they have planted, cultivated and picked. In other words, they control everything except the ownership of the land. In addition to this control over the vineyard, they also sell in bulk what is not good enough to go into the bottles that carry their label. Having made the selection in the vineyard, they are able to make a further selection in the winery. Lynch-Moussas has been thoroughly renovated in the last 30 years and is now producing high quality claret. Lynch-Moussas' impressive château dates back to 1850, but the key date in Lynch-Moussas` history was 1969 when it was bought by Emile Castéja, owner of Château Batailley and négociant firm Borie-Manoux. Extensive replanting and much-needed modernisation in the cellars have transformed the quality of the wine. Lynch-Moussas is a typically a blend is Cabernet Sauvignon based and the wine is aged in 60% new oak barrels for between 12 and 18 months. The wines are rich in black fruits and display prominent vanilla notes. For a Pauillac, Lynch-Moussas contains a relatively high proportion of Merlot and is consequently a softer, silkier and lusher wine than many of its neighbours.

Food Matches: Red Meat / Venison / Soft Cheese

Country: Italy Region: Piemonte

Varietal: Nebbiolo Vintage: 2018

Colour: Red Style: Dry

Producer: Pio Cesare

Description:
Pio Cesare has been producing wine for more than 100 years and through generations. These grapes are always picked last, but the wine has a similar alcohol level as the rest, around 14.5% in a warm year like 2019. The modus operandi is similar to other of the top cuvées—harvested into 200-kilogram boxes, destemming, optical sorting and fermentation in small oak casks with indigenous yeasts. The élevage in this case is extended to 36 months, and the barrels are only 10% new. This is, year in, year out, my favorite wine from Muga, and in this powerful and ripe year, these late-harvesting vines ripened thoroughly and delivered a full array of aromas and flavors so that the wine has plenty of depth and complexity. It has a very classical profile, with incipient tertiary notes, perfumed, floral and rich, textured and beautifully balanced. They compare this 2015 with 2009 and 2005 in terms of style but with freshness in the style of 2001 and 2010. It's enjoyable but should also develop for a long time in bottle. One of the finest Prado Enea vintages. It was bottled in November 2018. There's no 2012 or 2013 of this. After a few attempts, he realised that the best wine was one produced from 100% Chardonnay, so grafted Chardonnay onto existing vines on the estate. 1987 was the first vintage for the ‘Collezione De Marchi Chardonnay’. The Chardonnay is made in a more Burgundian style than most in Italy. It remains on the lees in 1/3 new oak barrels 10 months (up to 12 months depending on the vintage). The estate is located in the central part of Chianti Classico in the province of Tuscany. In the beginning of the 1950s the De Marchi family gradually began phasing out the sharecropping system, new specialized vineyards were planted and the wine cellars were expanded. Today the Isole e Olena estate is run by Paolo de Marchi and his family. Paolo, widely known as one of Italy’s finest winemakers, comes from a family with three generations of winemaking experience in the northern section of Piedmont and in 1976 he began managing the estate with the goal of combining his technical training with the desire to firmly establish the winery as one of the forerunners in Chianti. At that time the cellars were modernized and experimental vineyard plots were planted. The traditional 4-grape Chianti Classico blend was gradually altered to decrease the quantity of white grapes until none at all were used. Thus the Isole e Olena Chianti evolved from being a light, young wine to the fuller-bodied wine of today.

Tasting Notes:

Deep straw yellow.
