It is a part of the Hess Family Estates and is run with the same dedication to quality, sustainability and social responsibility as the other Hess Estates. These are located in the Cafayate Valley in the very heart of the Calchaqui Valley, distinguished for being the highest wine region in the world. The climate here is very dry, with just 150mm of rain in an average year and a huge diurnal temperature change of around 20°C. The soils here are rocky, poor and sandy so the roots of the vines are forced to dig deep to find the vital nutrients and water they need, which in turn results in a huge concentration of flavour within the fruit.

VINIFICATION
The grapes went through a double selection process, firstly in the vineyard and then again on the sorting table at the winery. The grapes are pressed without any maceration. A slow fermentation took place using selected yeasts, for around 30 days at a controlled temperature of 14°C, which helped to retain the varietal fruit character. The wine was aged in stainless steel tanks for three months before a further two months in bottle.

TASTING NOTES
This wine is pale gold in colour with youthful highlights. The wine is a rich golden sunset orange. Oranges, too, set the tone for its astonishing, perfume-like aromas: once smelled, never forgotten. On the palate it is thick, liquorous and unctuous, though still bright with that intense orange fruit. In some sweet wines, sheer intensity of sugar substitutes for complexity. Not here. This allows a perfect marriage between rainfall, temperature and the number of hours of sunshine needed for the best maturation of Alvarinho grapes. The lees ageing has given a roundness in the mouth that balances the acidity. Soalheiro make many different Alvarinho's but this is called their 'classic' and for very good reasons. Bright, pure and with the potential for long ageing, as the 2017 just tasted demonstrates. In addition to the roundness, there is a slight friction in the texture that adds another layer to this wine – more than just lovely fruit. Long finish with a touch of spice. This was the first wine produced by the family back in 1982, a varietal with floral aromas and good ripeness and freshness, noted by 12.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.17 coupled with 6.4 grams of acidity. Here, they don't do skin contact or malolactic, as they're trying to keep the purity and freshness, and they ferment it with neutral yeasts and keep it unoaked with lees for at least two months. All their wines have the dry granite finish, even the entry-level ones. 385,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2025. In my experience, this wine is much better with a little time in bottle. I'd wait at least until next year to pull the cork. 'Green' is often an insult in winemaking terms, but in Portugal's granite-soiled Vinho Verde ('green wine') region, it's a prerequisite. The joy of Alvarinho, of course, is that it adds an extra aromatic note of floral charm here (apricots are more typical in Galicia), so your journey into the wine is as much journey into flower garden as it is forest glade. The palate is impressive: there's nothing slender or shivering about it, nor does it rely on sweet tweaks. Instead, it's svelte and textured, with density to match the wine's natural drive and freshness. Its 12.5% is low enough to make it a white to drink, not to sip… with or without food. This wine would make both a quenching aperitif and a perfect summer-salad white."
97/100 points and 'Best in Show'
Decanter World Wine Awards 2025.

Country: France Region: Bordeaux (Saint-Emilion)

Varietal: 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc

Vintage: 2022 Colour: Red Style: Dry

Producer: Château Fonplegade

Description:
Located on Saint-Emilion's prized limestone plateau, Château Fonpléade has been owned by Stephen Adams, an American investor and his wife, since 2004 (he also owns property in California's Dry Creek Valley, as well as Château L'Enclos in Pomerol). There’s an impressive tension between the alcohol (offering an opulent background and fleshy texture) and the acidity, which brings mouth-watering precision. The alcohol offers power, but despite the ABV, it’s never intrusive. The tannins are now resolving, but there’s still the edginess of youth at this stage. It's plusher and opulent than it showed then, with layers of black cherry, cassis fruit, orange pith and glycerine. On the palate, it reveals a silky texture and a balanced structure, supported by fine tannins and vibrant acidity. A unique location, a special microclimate, the foresight in the early 1980s to plant Merlot as the ideal grape to complement Sangiovese in a very particular "terroir" produce a wine which is perfectly balanced between elegance, power and complexity. The Siepi vineyard's exposure is unique, situated as it is on a plateau that is well lit throughout the day and that is surrounded by an oak forest, creating the perfect microclimate with major differences in temperature between day and night. The Mazzei were one of the first families in the Chianti Classico area to have the foresight in the early 1980s to plant Merlot as the ideal grape to complement Sangiovese. Siepi was chosen to host this experiment on account of the particular composition of its soil, made up of calcareous and marl schist mixed with very advanced clays, that brings out the best in this uniquely warm and opulent grape variety.

98/100 Points
James Suckling
"Graphite and lead pencil is coming through, together with violets and blackberries.
